In January 2024, Val\u00e9rie Barkowski embarked for the first time on the Steam Ship Sudan<\/strong>. A scouting trip, and from the very first hours aboard, this feeling: the Sudan is lived, for real. A different space-time, with a gentleness and grace that have become rare.<\/p>

This is the starting point of an eighteen-month textile design mission<\/strong>. A Boat, a History<\/h2>

The Steam Ship Sudan<\/strong> was built in 1885 in Scotland for the Thomas Cook fleet, pioneer of tourism on the Nile. Shipped in parts to Cairo before being assembled, it served the kings of Egypt – Fouad, then Farouk – before becoming one of the most elegant cruise boats on the river.<\/p>

In 1933, Agatha Christie embarked with her husband, archaeologist Max Mallowan. It was aboard that she wrote the first lines of what would become Death on the Nile<\/em>. The cabin she occupied remains, to this day, the most requested on the boat.<\/p>

After decades of abandonment, Voyageurs du Monde<\/strong> purchased the boat in 2000 and returned it to service in 2001. The sole survivor of the Thomas Cook & Son steamers still in navigation, the Steam Ship Sudan<\/strong> now sails between Luxor and Aswan, with its 18 cabins and 6 suites, for approximately fifty passengers.<\/p>

It is to preserve the elegance of this legend that Voyageurs du Monde<\/strong> entrusted Val\u00e9rie Barkowski with a targeted textile design and sourcing consulting<\/strong> mission. In collaboration with the vessel’s artistic direction, her intervention focused on the exclusive creation of luxury bed linens<\/strong>, high-end bath linens<\/strong> and table linens, the design of staff uniforms<\/strong>, the selection of upholstery elements for the exterior decks<\/strong>, the design of the onboard boutique<\/strong>, and the rigorous sourcing of welcome products and amenities<\/strong>.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

How This Mission Began<\/h2>

Val\u00e9rie Barkowski has followed Voyageurs du Monde<\/strong> for over twenty years. A company she knows from the inside, having traveled with them, and whose philosophy she shares: quality of service, attention to detail, the cultural aspect at the heart of every journey, respect for places and teams. The boat’s communications director approached her with a simple idea: it would be wonderful to have V.Barkowski<\/strong> linens aboard. The bathrobes were already there. But imports into Egypt are complex. So Val\u00e9rie Barkowski proposed something else: conduct an assessment on site, design the linens, and have them produced in Egypt.<\/p>

Less than two months later, she was aboard for a reconnaissance trip. January 2024. The mission officially began in August 2024.<\/p>

A Two-Part Mission: Design and Consulting<\/h2>

The scope of the project quickly became apparent. Val\u00e9rie Barkowski intervened as both textile designer<\/strong> and consultant<\/strong>: two distinct but inseparable roles in this context.<\/p>

The design component covers twenty products: table linens<\/strong> (different tablecloths and napkins for each meal), bed linens<\/strong> (sheet, duvet cover, pillowcases), bath linens<\/strong> (bath sheets, towels, mats, shower curtain, sundeck sheets). To which are added the uniforms for the eight trades aboard, the upholstery textiles for deck furniture, covers, gangway runners, and the creation of an onboard boutique that did not exist.<\/p>

The consulting component is of a different nature: source materials in Egypt, identify artisans, establish a local supply chain<\/strong>, train an internal person to ensure continuity. Start from a blank page and build something sustainable.<\/p>

Local Production: Workshops, Stories<\/h2>

The raw material is noble: Egyptian combed cotton poplin<\/strong>, linen and cotton for table linens, hand-woven for bath towels. This choice of artisanal local production<\/strong> is a working method that Val\u00e9rie Barkowski has applied for thirty years in Marrakech, and elsewhere, transposed here to the Egyptian context.<\/p>

The bath towels and sundeck sheets are hand-woven in an Egyptian province specialized in this craft. The finishes, a blend of fringes and embroidery, are done by hand by refugees in a workshop in Cairo.<\/p>

The table linens are partly produced by a Cairo workshop that employs women in precarious situations, primarily divorced women or those abandoned by their families. The Luxor Workshop: A Story of Chance<\/h2>

The bed linens were to be produced by a local contractor. This contact proved unreliable. During a trip to Luxor, Val\u00e9rie Barkowski shared her situation with someone who owns a weaving workshop, and who mentioned a project she had long nurtured: setting up a sewing workshop.<\/p>

Two months later, the first machines were delivered. The workshop started, slowly, carefully, steps away from the boat. The Onboard Boutique<\/h2>

The boutique did not exist. Val\u00e9rie Barkowski found the location, conceived the concept, coordinated the implementation with architect Rapha\u00ebl Pialoux. Accessible to passengers on the cruise, it now features: bathrobes, dry oils, soap, massage candles, porcelain cups and saucers with the boat’s logo, bath linens<\/strong>, bed linens<\/strong>, and soon table linens<\/strong>.<\/p>
